ABOUT

Me and this Blog

I am a young mom in my thirties (but I feel like twenty). I come from Barranquilla, Colombia, the place where two of the most charismatic and beautiful female international stars come from: Shakira and Sofia Vergara.

I left the Colombian Caribbean Coast to come to Germany to study Political Sciences and later International Relations and Diplomacy Studies of the European Union in Belgium and found myself working among the most powerful decision makers in Berlin and Brussels.

Meanwhile I’ve been living abroad for eighteen years. During this time, I’ve accumulated quite a few interesting experiencies, both personally and professionally. But nothing compares to being a mom in a foreign country.

Being a mom is something beautiful, they said, and I agree. I love my children inconditionally and above all. But please, why didn’t they tell me how difficult it would be and surely the biggest challenge in a woman’s life. En plus, it is a thousand times more challenging if you live 10.000 kilometers away from your family while coping with a different (parenting) culture in Berlin’s mommy jungle and trying to be faithful to yourself as a (professionally ambitious) woman, wife and the best mom to your kids.

I had never experienced a real cultural shock in Germany - until I became mom to Nicolas in summer 2014 and, almost 4 years later, of Rafael! I chose to accept the challenge and this is all this blog is about: sharing the stories and lifestyle of an expat mom in Germany in all its crazyness, happiness and sadness, and learning to laugh about ourselves. While this blog is some kind of my personal ventil, I hope to be helpful to my fellow expat and new moms and those of you experiencing similar situations by sharing some advice and, above all, letting you know, that you are not alone!

As a Latin American woman, I love fashion, decoration, interior design and food. I consider myself a proud pinterest user, especially when it comes to throwing and decorating parties. At the same time I like to take part in social debates. I enjoy writing as well and am pretty communicative – sometimes to direct, so beware! But this is not a one woman show! From time to time I’d like to introduce you to other expat kick-ass moms and women, and their lifestlyles as well as different interesting findings.

And this is my motto: You can achieve whatever you want. Girl, after all you gave birth!

Some other facts about the blog:

Why Mutti? Well, this is the affectionate form of Mutter, the german word for mother. I really don’t like when people use it, but it just sound right and funny to me for both the fact that I am a mother in Germany and the political scientist nerdy connection to Angela Merkel, Mutti of the nation.

Why English? I would like to reach a great amount, if not all, of mommies in a similar situation like me. I can't tell if everyone speaks German or Spanish, so I rather stick to English. It doesn't mean I wouldn't write in Spanish or German if you like, though.

So welcome, lean back, enjoy the reading, and if you dare, share your feelings!
